When stuff becomes more than just stuff.

That piggy bank shaped like a golf ball? It’s more than just a piggy bank; it’s a Significant Object. Dreamed up by writers Rob Walker (Buying In) and Joshua Glenn (Taking Things Seriously), this project takes yard sale detritus and turns it into capital with the flick of a pen. Here’s how it works. A writer buys, say, golf ball piggy bank for a buck or two and writes a story about it. Suddenly the piggy bank is worth something, it’s the piggy bank in the story by Todd Pruzan or Curtis Sittenfeld or Toronto’s own Sheila Heti. The bank is then auctioned off on eBay for more than it was originally worth. Funny how that works.
