Surf’s up

The father of modern surfing and skateboarding.

I love watching surfing. Recently the trend has been to see who can ride the biggest, craziest waves but if you want to see something cool, go watch Larry Bertleman surf. In the 1970s his surfing was ahead of its time. Modern and stylish, it’s hard to believe it was 35 years ago. Bertleman had an afro, a pink board and was one of the first surfers to cut mega sponsorship deals. He was the inspiration for the Dogtown skaters who were trying to emulate his low stance and cutbacks that would go on to define modern skateboarding. Watching his videos on YouTube you simultaneously see the genesis of skateboarding and modern surfing.
