Free falling

Capturing the human body in suspended peril.

Arizona-based photographer Kerry Skarbakka likes to shoot himself in freefall, leaving the viewer with a certain cognitive dissonance. He creates a conflict between feeling bad about the fact something terrible has clearly happened – i.e. he lost his balance and now he’s going to crash – and being morbidly curious about what’s going to happen next. We’re in the middle of an action sequence and we want to see the end!
