Singing superheroes

Post-punk/new wave artists to the rescue.

It seems Brazilian graphic designer Butcher Billy was feeling a bit nostalgic about his youth when he created this mashup featuring music icons from the ’80s in the guise of superheroes. “Ian Curtis or Johnny Rotten are as iconic to me as Superman or Batman,” he says. So, naturally, he has Ian Curtis of Joy Division portrayed as the caped crusader on the cover of a comic, singing a lyric from “Shadowplay,” and Rotten (John Lydon) as Firestorm, singing “Rise.” It raises the question, who would the nemeses of these post-punk/new wave singers be? Pop artists? Alternative? Grown-up society?
