Singing superheroes

Post-punk/new wave artists to the rescue.

It seems Brazilian graphic designer Butcher Billy was feeling a bit nostalgic about his youth when he created this mashup featuring music icons from the ’80s in the guise of superheroes. “Ian┬áCurtis or Johnny Rotten are as iconic to me as┬áSuperman or Batman,” he says. So, naturally, he has Ian Curtis of Joy Division portrayed as the caped crusader on the cover of a comic, singing a lyric from “Shadowplay,” and Rotten (John Lydon) as Firestorm, singing “Rise.” It raises the question, who would the nemeses of these post-punk/new wave singers be? Pop artists? Alternative? Grown-up society?
