Deadly lake

Petrified bats and birds... oh my.
Calcified Swallow

Sounds like something out of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, but lake Natron in Tanzania literally calcifies animals that touch it. Photographer Nick Brandt discovered the animals (birds and bats) washed up on the shore and perfectly preserved, due in part to its high reflectivity (making it hard for the animals to see) and its extremely high-pH alkaline. So, naturally, upon discovering these petrified animals, he styled them to look like something out of a real-life horror flick.
