Project Tango

Mapping rooms in 3D, on your phone.
Project Tango

As visual effects artists and designers, we continually explore the real world, recreating and re-imagining it virtually. You’ve seen us on film sets and photo shoots, with measuring tapes and laser pointers in hand. All this work so that we can model a simple scene in a computer. Now, put that power in the hands of everybody, on their phone. Can you imagine walking around your home, scanning it in 3D to visualize where to put your next piece of furniture? Or mapping your office in three dimensions for a visually impaired worker? There are endless possibilities with Google’s Project Tango, which proposes democratizing the third dimension.

This week’s Frandoms are by David Casey, visual effects supervisor at The Embassy.
