Inflatable art

Exploring gender identity with buxom balloons.

U.S. artist Nancy Davidson has spent the last seven years focusing her art around the archetypal American cowgirl as projected in popular culture. She recently took that imagery into the realm of balloons with an exhibit at the Betty Cuningham Gallery in New York.

AsĀ succinctly puts it, Davidson’sĀ massive inflatable sculptures take on gender, feminism, and body image with a healthy dose of humor. Her focus on cowgirls stemmed from a visit to the Dallas-area Cowgirl Hall of Fame and the realization that cowgirls enjoy long careers but less glory and money than their male counterparts.
