Vincent and Nancy

Robots that work in a library and practice Tai Chi.

nancy and vincentThese little guys not only respond to 19 different languages, teach code, have great suggestions on books to read at their home in the Westport library, and tell patrons stories, they’re also experts in Tai Chi. (Have you ever seen a baby robot do slow moving martial arts? It’s surprisingly adorable.) The library picked up two of the humanoid robots for $8,000 a pop, and now they’re using them to help out around the aisles. It’s great to see a library embrace technology so comfortably, but we can’t help feel for the first staffers to lose their jobs to the bots when they can eventually do more than read books to kids. As if the traditional library world wasn’t under enough pressure of extinction.
