Facial recognition gets some team spirit

Critical Mass and Nissan help NCAA fans share their pride.



With November rolling on, the college football season has reached its halfway point. As part of its partnership with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Nissan was looking for a way to help millions of fans show their support at a time when they are most invested in the game.

Working with the team at Critical Mass’ Calgary office, the Diehard Fan app¬†uses the wonders of modern facial recognition technology to super-accurately apply face paint (it might seem like a frivolous way to use amazing tech, but if you’re a NCAA football fan, that’s probably the best thing you’ve ever seen). After choosing your favourite team, the app gives you 21 different designs to choose from, including ones exclusive to each school. From there, you can take photos or record a video of you cheering or singing a fight song, while the makeup moves to match every line, contour and trembling muscle of your screaming face.
