Cirque du Soleil dives into Mexico
Sid Lee crafts a weird/wonderful video for Cirque's new show.

Even though this video for Cirque du Soleil’s upcoming touring show Luzia, created by Sid Lee in partnership with Mexican video artists Flaminguettes, doesn’t show a single full shot of a character or acrobat, you still get a sense of exactly what the show is about. The name “Luzia” is a combination of two Spanish words (“luz,” meaning light, and “lluvia,” meaning rain), which are two elements at the core of the show itself as it explores Mexican culture. That all comes across in the vibrant images, the playful (if somewhat unique) animation and constant presence of nature under stylized falling rain. Hey, sometimes weird works.
