SickKids copywriter passes down his gift

Barnaby Southgate paints on the side, and has also taught current industry movers and shakers.

One might expect a copywriter’s side-hustle to involve furiously typing away at a great novel, hosting an irreverent blog or maybe even producing some brilliant poetry.

But Barnaby Southgate, a senior content writing specialist at the SickKids Foundation and a creative industry veteran, takes pleasure in being a multi-hyphenate creative. Southgate spends his non-typing time as a watercolour painter.

Southgate submitted a number of his watercolours, which depict familiar landscapes both urban and rural, featuring mellow colours and soft lines for a vintage feel.

Although Southgate has worked as a writer in the advertising industry for nearly 30 years, for agencies including DDB, McCann and BBDO, his visual artistic talent isn’t exactly a secret. For 15 years, he instructed at OCAD University, focusing on the Copy/Concept course to third and fourth-year students. Many of Southgate’s former students from the course have found careers in media, advertising and communications, said Southgate, including Cossette CD Jaimes Zentil, Camp Jefferson ACD Julie Nikolic and Conflict partner Niall Kelly.
