Burberry gets cinematic

The clothing brand develops an elaborate trailer with an all-star cast for its Christmas campaign.

The Most Interesting Man in the World retired this year, and his absence has been keenly felt in the advertising world. Into that void steps Thomas Burberry.

In a star-studded video that plays like a trailer for a biopic of the fashion label’s founder, a reimagined version of the brand is beautifully rendered.

Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) stars as Thomas Burberry, playing the role as an ambitious, brooding perfectionist who invented gabardine, a durable textile that he marketed through high-profile brand ambassadors.

Those include Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton (played by The Wire‘s Dominic West), and Betty Kirby-Green, a pilot who flew from England to South Africa’s Cape Town and back (that role, played by Downton Abbey‘s Lily James, is adapted to fit a fictional timeline that includes World War 1 and Burberry’s own lifetime). Sienna Miller (High-Rise) plays Burberry’s love interest.

The video is part of a Christmas campaign that will include cast members in print ads, appearing in top fashion magazines. Asif Kapadia directed, with Black Label Productions.
