Squids and monsters
Tentacled cephalopods inspire art.
Alberta-born and Montreal-based artist Nancy Anne McPhee draws inspiration from many influences – including squids, monster movies and her own drag persona. McPhee is a member of the troupe Dukes of Drag and performs regularly at the CafeĢ Cleopatra Drag Bar in Montreal. Of cephalopods, she has said, “the thing I love about [them] is that they’re the opposite of the human body. They’re soft, they’re uncomfortable and beautiful at the same time.” Her work is on display in Toronto at the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives in an exhibit called “Libraries,” featuring 65 ink-stained drawings of squid and octopi as well as two rooms as imagined by the artist.
