Slip into this ocean-saving Sponge Suit
A bikini that repels water while absorbing oil and pollutants.
Want to look good and do good at the same time? Meet the “Sponge Suit.” It’s a smart bathing suit that not only keeps its wearer dry, but also has the ability to absorb ocean contaminants, like oil. The piece was designed by New York architecture and design studio Eray Carbajo, with the team using the porous “Sponge” material created by University of California engineering professors Mihri Ozkan and Cengiz Ozkan. It’s comprised of two pieces: the 3D-printed shell for protection and support, and the “Sponge” for absorption. We always did like the idea of killing two birds with one stone.
