It’s what’s inside that counts

How do you look at people with Down syndrome?

Just because someone looks different on the outside, it doesn’t mean they’re different on the inside. People with Down syndrome are made of the same flesh and blood as everyone else, and more importantly, they too have the desire to realize their potential, and “live a meaningful, beautiful life.”

Those sentiments were shared by 19-year-old AnnaRose in a new spot from CoorDown (an Italian organisation that supports people with Down syndrome) and produced by Saatchi & Saatchi New York. For almost the entire spot, AnnaRose is played by actress Olivia Wilde as she shows us how she sees herself. She is more than someone with Down syndrome; she’s a “full time college student who works part-time at a physical therapy center and enjoys basketball and swimming through the Special Olympics NJ” – but would you assume that she’s capable of all those things if you just looked at her? That’s what the organization asks us in what is one of the most poignant spots we’ve seen this year.
