Surf’s up for Tesla
The electric car company unveiled special edition surfboards that sold out within hours.
Tesla’s Elon Musk has recently taken to launching more consumer-friendly products to promote his companies and entrepreneurial ventures.
Last year, the CEO tweeted a picture of a hat labelled with the name of his tunnel construction company – The Boring Company – whose name is a tongue-in-cheek statement about its wide-ranging activities. And then last month, it unveiled a Boring Company flamethrower.
Now Tesla itself has inspired itself from the strategy, launching limited-edition surfboards (available on its website for $1,500 U.S. each) that sold out within one day. The boards were designed by Tesla Design Studio with the help of surfboard manufacturer Lost Surfboards and Matt “Mayhem” Biolos, a renowned surfboard shaper.
The boards come with the same matte and gloss finishes as Tesla vehicles and are reinforced with carbon fiber inspired by the cars’ interiors.
The 200 boards that were produced sold out within hours. But reports suggested last-minute buyers could find one on eBay for as much as $5,000.
