Is Starbucks’ Tie-Dye Frapp the next Unicorn Frapp?
Judging by the social views, yup.
Lightning in a cup rarely strikes twice, but Starbucks Coffee Co. is trying to replicate the viral success of its Unicorn Frappuccino from the halycon days of spring of 2017.
A tweet about the new rainbow-hued drink (available in Canada and the U.S.) reads: “YESSSS!” followed by the raising hands emoji, then “#TieDye is here and it won’t last long.” I bet it won’t.
I’m not an 11-year-old girl so the thought of slurping back a Tie Dye Frappuccino that is supposed to taste “banana-candy-flavored” but actually tastes like “sugary melted licorice” makes me want to use the face vomiting emoji.
But while I’m not a tween I understand it really doesn’t matter what this Frapp (just like the Millennial-Pink Unicorn Frapp above) tastes like; it’s what it looks like that matters.
While I doubt this latest sugar-laden drink is appetizing, it’s visually yummy and meant to be on the Instagram feeds of everyone you know who’s under the age of, say, 25. And it will be. For those of us who are more than a quarter-century-old, we should all use the clapping hands emoji to congratulate the Starbucks marketing team on a job well done. The video promoting the limited-edition beverage already has 170,000 views on Twitter and an eye-popping 1.7 million views (and counting) on Instagram since being posted July 10. As the kids would say, that number of views is fire emoji.
